President William Ruto has vowed to cut down on executive’s travel costs in a bid to support learners with disabilities.

Speaking at Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE) while Commissioning the National Psycho-Educational Assessment and Research Centre and flagging off more than 200 vehicles for county directors of education, the head of state said the Ksh. 500 million he intends to slash will be used to construct a facility to manufacture assistive devices for children with disabilities.

“I am going to adjust my budget including the travel allowances so that I can find Ksh.500 million to start the manufacture of local devices that can assist in the learning of children with disabilities.”

According to President Ruto, the government will prioritize the domestic production of devices in order to reduce reliance on imports.

He further noted that his administration is committed to ensuring each child gets an opportunity to realize their full potential and achieve a high level of success.

President Ruto said the manufacturing plant will be constructed on a piece of land at Mavoko owned by KISE.

The president’s commitment comes days after it was revealed that government officials used Sh14 billion on travel in the nine months that ended March, which the controller of the budget said is the highest in a similar period in at least five years.
