Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has heaped praise on Mikel Arteta for transforming Arsenal into genuine contenders but cast doubt on whether the Spaniard can push the Gunners to the very top. Speaking on The Overlap, Scholes said Arteta deserves credit for the progress made since 2019 but admitted there are still questions over his long-term credentials.
Scholes noted that Arsenal’s style of play, squad depth, and consistency have all improved under Arteta, turning them from a struggling side into a team capable of challenging for titles. He highlighted the renewed competitiveness at the Emirates, pointing out that Arsenal are once again viewed as serious rivals in the Premier League.
However, the former England midfielder questioned whether Arteta can elevate the club into a team that consistently wins major trophies. He suggested that tactical acumen alone may not be enough, stressing that Arsenal must also develop the mentality to deliver in decisive moments if they are to bridge the gap with serial winners like Manchester City.
Scholes’ remarks followed Arsenal’s cautious display in a key clash against Liverpool, where he criticised the Gunners for failing to make the most of their creative talent. He argued that despite signings such as Eberechi Eze and Martin Ødegaard, Arsenal looked too restrained once they fell behind, raising doubts over whether Arteta’s approach can unlock the next level of success.
