A UN committee has revealed that more than 21,000 children in Gaza have sustained injuries that have led to long-term physical disabilities since the war between Israel and Hamas began on October 7, 2023. The findings, presented by the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, shed light on the devastating human cost of the conflict.
According to a United Nations committee, more than 21,000 children in Gaza have sustained injuries leading to long-term physical disabilities since the conflict between Israel and Hamas began on October 7, 2023. The UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities stated that of the approximately 40,500 children who have suffered "new war-related injuries," over half now face lasting physical challenges.
The committee highlighted several difficulties faced by those with physical disabilities in Gaza. It noted that the Israeli army's evacuation orders were often inaccessible to the deaf or visual impairments, making it impossible for many to safely leave. For instance, a committee member, Muhannad Al-Azzeh, cited the case of a deaf mother and her children in Rafah who were killed, as they were unable to hear the instructions to evacuate.
The report also described Persons with Disabilities being forced to flee in unsafe and undignified conditions, such as crawling through sand or mud without mobility aid. The committee further stated that restrictions on humanitarian aid have had a disproportionate effect on these individuals. Many have been left without crucial supplies like food and clean water, forcing them to rely on others for their survival.
