Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi has turned his attention to the upcoming World Championships in Tokyo after sealing another statement victory in Zurich. The 20-year-old Olympic 800m champion wrapped up his Diamond League campaign in style, clocking 1:42.37 to secure a third straight Diamond Trophy. He edged out Britain’s Max Burgin and Canada’s Marco Arop in a dramatic final sprint.
The Kenyan star has enjoyed a dominant season, highlighted by his world-leading 1:41.44 earlier this year. His performance in Zurich underlined his consistency on the circuit and reinforced his status as the favourite heading into the global showpiece.
Wanyonyi is no stranger to the biggest stages, having stormed to Olympic gold in Paris before narrowly missing out on top honours at last year’s World Championships in Budapest, where Arop took the title. That runner-up finish has only fuelled his determination.
Confident after a flawless Diamond League campaign, Wanyonyi believes the time has come to add the missing world gold to his growing collection. “My body is in the right shape, and my mind is focused on Tokyo,” he said, signalling his intent to dominate once again on athletics’ grandest stage.
