ODM Party Joint Parliamentary Group Meeting presided by Party Leader Hon. Dr. Oburu Odinga.

The Orange Democratic Movement Parliamentary Group has formally approved the opening of coalition negotiations ahead of the 2027 General Election, setting firm conditions aimed at safeguarding the party’s current political strength. The decision was reached during a high-level meeting bringing together ODM Members of Parliament and Senators.

The meeting was chaired by senior party leadership and attended by lawmakers allied to party leader Raila Odinga, alongside members of the National Assembly and Senate caucuses. Key figures present included Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi and Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, among other regional representatives.

According to participants, the main agenda was to deliberate on ODM’s strategic positioning ahead of 2027, evaluate potential coalition frameworks, and define non-negotiable terms in future political agreements. Lawmakers assessed the party’s current parliamentary numbers and regional strengths as a bargaining tool in negotiations.

During discussions, several MPs emphasized that ODM must enter any coalition from a position of influence rather than vulnerability. They argued that structured pre-election agreements could consolidate opposition and enhance prospects of forming or influencing the next government.

However, the Parliamentary Group issued a clear warning to prospective partners: no allied party should field candidates in constituencies or seats currently held by ODM representatives. Leaders described this as a protective measure designed to prevent internal competition and erosion of the party’s legislative footprint.

Speakers also stressed the need for discipline within party ranks, urging members to speak with one voice as coalition talks advance. They underscored that unity would be critical in maintaining voter confidence and negotiating leverage.

The outcome of the meeting grants the party leadership authority to begin structured engagements with like-minded political formations. These talks are expected to explore presidential arrangements, seat-sharing formulas, and policy alignment.

Political analysts say the resolution positions ODM as open to strategic alliances while firmly defending its territorial bases. The decision could reshape alignments within both opposition and government-leaning blocs as parties begin early realignments ahead of the 2027 contest.

If successfully negotiated, the coalition strategy could strengthen ODM’s national bargaining power and electoral prospects. However, failure to secure favorable terms or manage internal dissent may expose the party to fragmentation as the political landscape intensifies in the run-up to the next general election.
