Paul Scholes says Arsenal and Manchester City don’t deserve to win the Premier League this season

Former Paul Scholes has sparked debate after questioning whether any club in the Premier League truly deserves to be crowned champions this season. On The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Scholes said, "No Premier League club has convinced me that they should be Premier League champions. I don't think they should give the trophy out this year. No club deserves it."

Turning specifically to Arsenal, who currently top the league, Scholes acknowledged their strong position but stopped short of full praise. He said, "Arsenal winning the league? They probably should. But I like to watch entertaining football teams, teams that make me go 'WOW' and that can score every minute."

Scholes emphasized that his opinion hinges on style and entertainment, not just points, explaining that a team winning the title should inspire excitement with forward play and frequent goals. He suggested that the league this season has lacked the kind of teams that “make me go 'WOW'” consistently.

The former Manchester United midfielder also criticized the attacking quality of current leaders, arguing that title-winning teams usually feature forwards capable of dominating games and creating memorable moments — something he believes is missing this season.

His comments prompted mixed reactions among former players and pundits. Steve Bruce disagreed, emphasizing that over a 38-game season, consistency matters more than style, and league position alone can justify a champion.

Analyst Jamie Carragher echoed a nuanced view, acknowledging that while the campaign might lack the attacking fireworks of previous seasons, defensive structure and tactical discipline remain vital components of championship success.

Gary Neville defended Arsenal’s overall performance, highlighting their resilience and ability to win tight matches, traits he argued are often decisive in securing the Premier League title.

Data from the season so far shows Arsenal leading in points, with solid defensive stats, though their attacking output has not always dazzled spectators, aligning with Scholes’ critique of style versus results.

Scholes’ remarks highlight the ongoing debate in football over whether the Premier League crown should reward sheer consistency and results or also take into account flair, entertainment, and attacking brilliance — a discussion likely to continue as the season progresses.
