Nicky Butt Urges Manchester United to Avoid Repeating Striker Mistakes

Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt has warned his old club against relying too heavily on untested strikers, voicing concerns over the signing of Benjamin Šeško.

Speaking to BetMGM, Butt admitted that while he rates Matheus Cunha’s development, he believes United should have pursued a more experienced option to lead the line.

“I know [Matheus] Cunha has done really well over the last couple of seasons but I would really like an experienced striker,” Butt said.

The ex-United captain drew parallels with last season’s arrival of Rasmus Højlund, stressing that signing Šeško carried similar risks. “I hope I’m wrong but I really hope they aren’t making the same mistakes with [Benjamin] Sesko as they did with Rasmus [Hojlund]. A young player coming in with no Premier League experience, it just feels like history repeating itself.”

Butt suggested that a proven Premier League forward would have been a better choice, highlighting Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins as an example. “Honestly, for what it would have cost, I would have gone and brought in someone like Ollie Watkins, someone to help and pull the young strikers out of a bad patch,” he added.
