Netherlands Edge Lithuania In Five-Goal Thriller

The Netherlands battled past Lithuania with a narrow 3-2 win in Kaunas on Sunday, keeping their World Cup qualification campaign on track. Memphis Depay led the charge, scoring twice to become the country’s all-time leading scorer with 52 international goals.
Depay opened the scoring early in the 11th minute before Quinten Timber struck his maiden goal for the national team to double the advantage. However, Lithuania, ranked outside the top 100 in world football, responded impressively to silence the visiting fans.
Gvidas Gineitis halved the deficit in the 36th minute before Edvinas Girdvainis powered in a header just before halftime to bring the hosts level. The Dutch defence looked unsettled, and for a moment, a major upset loomed large in Kaunas.
The Oranje restored control in the second half when Depay headed home in the 64th minute to secure all three points. With the victory, the Netherlands climbed to the top of Group G on 10 points, three clear of Poland, while Lithuania’s brave resistance ended without reward.
