Nairobi United Moves to Court Seeking Replay of Abandoned Gor Mahia Match

Nairobi United FC has taken the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to the Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT), challenging the decision on their abandoned Premier League match against Gor Mahia. The match, held at Dandora Stadium on December 21, 2025, was halted in the 58th minute due to fan unrest, with the score tied at 1–1.
The FKF Leagues and Competitions Committee had ruled that the match would not be replayed and awarded each team one point, citing force majeure and safety concerns. Nairobi United has contested this ruling, claiming the decision was unfair and seeks a full replay of the fixture.
The club filed the case at the SDT on February 5, 2026, with representative Nelson Odaya swearing an affidavit outlining the grounds for urgent intervention. The application challenges both the points allocation and the disciplinary proceedings initiated against the club by FKF.
On February 6, 2026, the SDT certified the matter as urgent and issued a temporary injunction. The injunction halts the FKF’s decision and suspends any related disciplinary proceedings against Nairobi United pending the tribunal’s full hearing.
Nairobi United argues that the abandonment was not caused by any misconduct on their part and that FKF’s ruling denies them a fair opportunity to compete for points that could affect their league standing. The club insists the match should be replayed to maintain fairness in the Premier League.
The FKF has yet to formally respond to the court application, but sources indicate the federation is preparing to defend the committee’s ruling, citing safety concerns and standard league protocols for abandoned matches.
The tribunal has scheduled responses from FKF and other interested parties to be filed by February 12, 2026. Oral submissions in the matter are set for February 13, 2026, after which the tribunal will determine the next course of action.
This case comes at a critical stage of the FKF Premier League season, where points from every match could influence the race for the title and relegation battles. Both clubs are eager for clarity on how the abandoned fixture will ultimately be resolved.
The outcome of Nairobi United’s legal challenge could set a precedent for how FKF handles abandoned matches in the future and may influence rules on fan safety, match suspensions, and league point allocations.
