Nairobi County Approves Two Monthly Menstrual Off Days for Women Employees

Nairobi City County has approved a policy granting women employees two menstrual off days per month, formally integrating the measure into its human resource framework. The decision, endorsed by the County Executive Committee, is intended to promote staff wellbeing while improving productivity and workplace inclusivity within the county government.
Under the policy, eligible female employees will be allowed to take up to two days off each month to manage menstrual health needs without penalties or adverse administrative consequences. County officials said the move recognises menstrual health as a legitimate workplace concern that can affect performance and attendance if not adequately addressed.
The policy follows internal assessments and consultations which highlighted the impact of menstrual-related discomfort on women at work. Officials noted that a significant number of women experience symptoms that interfere with their ability to perform duties effectively, underscoring the need for a structured and supportive approach.
Women constitute a substantial portion of Nairobi County’s workforce, making the policy one of the most wide-reaching employee welfare initiatives adopted by the county in recent years. Implementation will be guided by existing HR procedures to ensure consistency, accountability and continuity of service delivery.
Nairobi County becomes the first county government in Kenya to formally institutionalise menstrual leave for its employees, a move that has been welcomed by gender equality advocates. Supporters say the policy could influence other county governments and public institutions to adopt similar gender-responsive workplace practices.
