The Social Health Authority has added Positron Emission Tomography scan services to its patient cover, expanding access to advanced cancer diagnosis in Kenya.
The inclusion allows patients registered under SHA to receive PET scans as part of their benefits, reducing reliance on out-of-pocket payments for the specialised service.
PET scans are used in the detection, staging and monitoring of cancer, enabling doctors to assess how diseases spread and respond to treatment.
The authority said the service will be available in six accredited hospitals across the country equipped with the required diagnostic technology.
Among the facilities offering the service are Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital, Nairobi West Hospital and Aga Khan University Hospital.
Other accredited centres include Cancer Care Kenya, RFH Specialist Hospital and Ultra Diagnostic Centre Limited.
The move is part of ongoing reforms in the health sector aimed at strengthening access to specialised and critical care services.
Health officials indicated that the addition of PET scans is expected to improve early detection of cancer and enhance treatment planning.
The service had previously been limited to a few facilities and was often unaffordable for many patients due to high costs.
By incorporating the scans into SHA coverage, the government aims to increase equity in access to cancer diagnostics.
The rollout is aligned with efforts to improve outcomes for cancer patients through timely and accurate diagnosis.
Patients have been advised to seek the service from accredited hospitals and follow SHA guidelines on accessing specialised care.
