McFarlane Tasked With Steering Chelsea Through Season Finale Test

Chelsea are currently under the management of interim head coach Calum McFarlane, who stepped in following the departure of Liam Rosenior after a difficult run of results.
Rosenior’s exit came after a series of disappointing performances, with the club deciding to make an immediate change in order to stabilise the season.
McFarlane, who is part of Chelsea’s internal coaching structure, was promoted to guide the first team on a temporary basis while the club evaluates long-term options.
This is not his first spell in charge, as he has previously taken interim responsibility during earlier managerial transitions within the same season.
His appointment reflects Chelsea’s recent tendency to rely on internal staff to manage short-term periods of instability rather than immediately hiring external replacements.
McFarlane’s main responsibility is to ensure continuity within the squad and maintain competitive performance across remaining competitions.
He is currently in charge of all remaining Premier League fixtures, which form the final phase of Chelsea’s 2025/26 campaign.
In addition to league duties, he also leads the team in the FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United, one of the club’s key matches of the season.
The interim coach is working closely with existing backroom staff to ensure training, tactics, and match preparation remain consistent during the transition period.
Chelsea’s leadership has stated that McFarlane will remain in charge until the end of the season, providing stability while a permanent managerial decision is considered.
Despite the interim nature of his role, he is expected to manage high-pressure fixtures, including top-six clashes and decisive end-of-season matches that could influence European qualification.
The club is expected to assess long-term managerial candidates during the summer, with McFarlane’s role primarily focused on short-term performance and squad management until that decision is made.
