Manchester United Confirm Michael Carrick As Permanent Head Coach On Two-Year Deal

Michael Carrick is now the permanent manager of Manchester United!
Manchester United FC have officially confirmed the appointment of Michael Carrick as the club’s permanent head coach on a two-year contract following an impressive interim spell at Old Trafford.
Carrick took charge in January 2026 after the departure of Ruben Amorim, who was dismissed following a difficult run of results and internal tensions at the club. The former United midfielder was initially appointed until the end of the season before quickly transforming the team’s performances.
The 44-year-old guided Manchester United back into the UEFA Champions League places after the club had fallen outside the top four earlier in the campaign. United also secured a guaranteed third-place Premier League finish under his leadership.
Carrick won 11 of his 16 matches in charge, recording major victories against rivals including Manchester City FC, Arsenal FC, Liverpool FC, and Chelsea FC.
Manchester United’s hierarchy, led by chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, reportedly viewed Carrick as the ideal candidate to continue leading the club after restoring confidence inside the dressing room.
According to reports, Carrick’s new agreement runs until 2028 and also includes the option of an additional year depending on performances and future progress.
Carrick said he was proud to lead the club permanently, describing Manchester United as a special place after spending more than a decade at Old Trafford as both a player and coach.
The former England midfielder previously enjoyed enormous success during his playing career at United under legendary manager Alex Ferguson, winning five Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League.
Carrick had also briefly managed Manchester United in 2021 following the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjær before later taking charge of Middlesbrough FC in the Championship.
Assistant coach Steve Holland is expected to remain part of Carrick’s technical bench together with several members of the interim backroom staff assembled earlier this year.
Several senior Manchester United players, including captain Bruno Fernandes, reportedly supported Carrick’s permanent appointment after the squad responded positively to his leadership and tactical adjustments.
Carrick now faces the challenge of rebuilding Manchester United into Premier League title contenders as the club prepares for a major summer transfer window ahead of the 2026/27 season.
