There is growing expectation that a decision in the long-running case involving Manchester City and the Premier League over 115 alleged financial rule breaches could be delivered within the coming weeks, according to multiple reports and legal analysts.
The Premier League charged Manchester City in February 2023 over alleged breaches of financial regulations between 2009 and 2018, including accusations linked to inaccurate financial reporting, undisclosed payments and failure to cooperate with investigations. The club has consistently denied all allegations.
An independent commission heard the case during a lengthy private hearing that reportedly concluded in December 2024, but no final ruling has yet been publicly released.
Recent reports indicate that the panel is now believed to be in the final drafting stage of its decision, with former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson suggesting the verdict could arrive shortly after the end of the current football season.
Borson stated that information from legal circles pointed to the drafting process nearing completion, although he cautioned that previous expectations on timing had also proved inaccurate.
The case is considered one of the biggest legal disputes in Premier League history because of the potential consequences if City are found guilty. Possible sanctions discussed by analysts include heavy fines, transfer restrictions, points deductions or, in extreme scenarios, expulsion from the league.
Legal experts have also noted the complexity of the proceedings, with reports suggesting the case involved vast amounts of evidence and legal submissions, contributing to the lengthy delay before a final ruling.
Despite speculation surrounding the case, there is currently no official confirmation from either the Premier League or Manchester City on the exact date the verdict will be announced.
The anticipated decision is expected to have major implications for English football, particularly given Manchester City’s dominance during the period covered by the charges, which saw the club win multiple Premier League titles under manager Pep Guardiola.
