Liverpool Set For Champions League Clash With Atlético Madrid

Liverpool welcome Atlético de Madrid to Anfield tonight in a much-anticipated Champions League league-phase fixture, with kickoff set for 19:00 GMT.
The Reds head into the tie boasting an impressive European record. Jürgen Klopp’s men have won their last four Champions League group or league matches against Spanish sides, including two victories over Atleti in the 2021/22 campaign, as well as triumphs over Real Madrid and Girona in last season’s league phase. Liverpool have also won their last 14 home UEFA club competition league-stage matches, scoring two or more goals in 13 of those games and keeping nine clean sheets in their last 12 outings.
Liverpool’s attacking threats remain clear. Florian Wirtz has hit six goals in his first nine Champions League appearances – a German record at this stage – while Mohamed Salah has netted 18 times in his last 20 league-phase matches. The Reds, however, will be cautious after their 12-match winning run in the competition ended with a 3-2 defeat at PSV last season.
Diego Simeone’s Atlético arrive with a contrasting record against English opposition. The Madrid club have won just one of their last eight Champions League ties against English teams and remain without a victory in any group or league-phase clash against them. Despite that, Atleti have lost their Matchday 1 fixture in only two of their last 15 campaigns and have found the net in 15 of their last 16 group/league matches, underlining their attacking consistency.
Both sides are targeting a strong start in Group action, with Liverpool seeking to extend their formidable Anfield record and Atleti determined to break their hoodoo against English clubs.
