Kenyan long-distance runner Albert Korir has been handed a five-year ban after admitting to using a prohibited performance-enhancing substance.

Albert Korir, the 2021 New York City Marathon champion, has been handed a five-year ban after admitting to the use of a prohibited performance-enhancing substance, the Athletics Integrity Unit has confirmed.

The sanction follows an anti-doping investigation which found that the Kenyan runner violated rules relating to the presence and use of a banned substance under the regulations of World Athletics.

According to the AIU, Korir tested positive for Methoxy polyethylene glycol-epoetin beta (CERA), a synthetic EPO-based substance known to enhance endurance by increasing red blood cell production.

The prohibited substance is classified under erythropoiesis-stimulating agents and is strictly banned both in and out of competition due to its performance-enhancing effects.

Investigations revealed that Korir provided multiple samples in October 2025, all of which returned adverse analytical findings, indicating repeated use during the same period.

The case initially carried a potential six-year ban due to aggravating circumstances, including the presence of multiple positive tests tied to the athlete.

However, the sanction was reduced to five years after Korir admitted the violation early and accepted the consequences, in line with anti-doping rules that allow mitigation for cooperation.

The period of ineligibility began on January 8, 2026, the date when his provisional suspension took effect, and will run until 2031.

As part of the ruling, all competitive results recorded from early October 2025 have been disqualified, including titles, prize money, and ranking points earned during that period.

Korir also forfeits financial earnings from affected races and is barred from participating in any competitions or activities sanctioned by World Athletics during the ban.

The athlete rose to global prominence after winning the 2021 New York City Marathon and had since been regarded as one of Kenya’s top marathoners.

The case adds to growing concerns over doping among Kenyan athletes, with authorities maintaining that strict enforcement measures will continue to protect the integrity of the sport.
