Jürgen Klopp has urged Real Madrid to adopt a more strategic approach when it comes to changing managers, following the sudden dismissal of Xabi Alonso.
The former Liverpool manager emphasized the importance of having a successor already in mind before making such decisions.
Speaking to the media, Klopp said, “My recommendation would be that when you fire a coach, you have a clear idea of who will succeed him.” He suggested that Madrid’s habit of acting quickly without a concrete plan could create instability within the squad.
Klopp also warned the club against chasing high-profile names without considering practicality. “And that it be realistic. If you think you can sign Pep Guardiola, I would say the chances aren’t particularly great,” he added, highlighting the difficulty of luring elite managers away from their current commitments.
The German coach addressed rumours linking him to the vacant Real Madrid role, describing them as media speculation rather than concrete offers. He stressed that he is satisfied with his current executive role at Red Bull.
“I’m in a place as a person where I’m completely at peace with where I am. I don’t want to be somewhere else,” Klopp said, signaling no immediate plans to return to frontline coaching. On whether he might coach again in the future, he added, “Right now I would say no, but I can’t say never, never, never.”
Real Madrid recently appointed Álvaro Arbeloa as interim manager after Alonso’s brief stint in charge, demonstrating the club’s ongoing struggle to maintain stability in the dugout. Klopp’s comments suggest that top clubs should focus more on succession planning before making managerial changes.
The remarks come amid growing debate over the pressure on elite clubs to deliver instant results. Klopp’s perspective reinforces the idea that careful planning and realistic expectations are crucial to avoid repeated upheavals at Europe’s biggest football institutions.
