Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has said the government has successfully revived stalled road projects after clearing massive pending bills owed to contractors when President William Ruto assumed office.
Speaking at State House on Wednesday, Kindiki revealed that many road projects had ground to a halt in 2022, with contractors owed about Sh190 billion, a situation that had severely disrupted infrastructure development across the country.
He noted that the current administration prioritised settling the outstanding bills, a move that has restored confidence in the construction sector and enabled contractors to return to site, marking what he described as the full return of the national roads programme.
According to the Deputy President, the resumption of road works is already having a positive ripple effect on the economy through job creation, improved connectivity, and renewed activity in towns and rural areas where projects had stalled.
Kindiki said the government remains committed to completing ongoing projects while ensuring new ones are undertaken in a sustainable and financially responsible manner to avoid a recurrence of stalled works.
Beyond infrastructure, the Deputy President stressed the importance of long-term planning and steady leadership in the management of national affairs, warning against the temptation of short-term populism.
He said effective leadership demands foresight, discipline, and resilience, particularly during periods of economic uncertainty and political turbulence, adding that quick fixes often create deeper problems in the long run.
Kindiki argued that the government’s approach is anchored on difficult but necessary decisions aimed at stabilising the economy and laying a strong foundation for future growth.
He urged leaders to focus on policies that deliver lasting value to citizens rather than measures designed solely to win short-term political applause.
As the country continues to navigate economic and social challenges, Kindiki said the administration remains focused on steady progress, insisting that sustainable development can only be achieved through patience, consistency, and responsible leadership.
