Oketch, Tinega To Make Debut At The 2026 World Athletics Indoor Championships

Kenyan athletes Mercy Oketch and Brian Tinega have successfully qualified for the finals of the 400 metres at the 2026 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Toruń, Poland. The achievement marks a milestone for Kenya in sprint events, where the country has historically focused on middle- and long-distance disciplines.

Oketch progressed through the heats with a time of 51.57 seconds, finishing second in her race to secure automatic qualification for the semi-finals. She maintained strong form in the semis, earning a place in the final and becoming one of Kenya’s first women sprinters to reach this stage at the indoor championships.

Tinega also delivered a composed performance in the men’s 400 metres heats, clocking 46.21 seconds to finish second and advance to the semi-final round. He subsequently secured his place in the final, giving Kenya representation in both men’s and women’s 400 metres finals.

Both athletes have built their careers through domestic and international competition, with Oketch holding Kenya’s national record for the women’s 400 metres indoors and outdoors. Tinega has competed in recent global events, including the 2025 World Championships and World Relays.

Kenya’s delegation for the indoor championships is relatively small, with participants in sprint and middle-distance events. The country has limited indoor training facilities, making these achievements significant given the international level of competition.

Oketch and Tinega have also benefited from training opportunities abroad, particularly in the United States collegiate system, which has helped them prepare for high-level indoor competitions. Their performances underline Kenya’s growing competitiveness in sprint events.

Other Kenyan athletes at the championships include Noah Kibet in the men’s 800 metres, who has advanced through preliminary rounds, reflecting a broader national effort to expand presence beyond traditional distance events.

The 400 metres finals will feature strong international competitors, with both Oketch and Tinega aiming to secure podium finishes. Analysts note that Kenya’s qualification in both men’s and women’s finals is an encouraging sign for the country’s sprint programme.

Kenya’s sprinters will now focus on recovery and tactical preparation ahead of the finals, which are scheduled for the last day of the championships. Their performance is expected to boost national morale and signal Kenya’s potential in future indoor competitions.

The advancement of Oketch and Tinega represents a highlight of Kenya’s campaign at the 2026 World Athletics Indoor Championships, showcasing the country’s expanding footprint in global track and field events.
