Local News Updated: 23 October 2025 07:55 EAT
The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a warning of heavy rainfall exceeding 30mm expected across the Highlands and South-Eastern Lowlands starting Thursday, October 23. Residents have been urged to take precautions against potential floods and landslides.
The affected regions include the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Highlands west and east of the Rift Valley, Nairobi, and parts of the South-Eastern Lowlands such as Kitui, Makueni, and Taita Taveta. The rains mark the beginning of the October-November-December short rains season and are expected to extend to parts of the North-East from October 30.
Authorities advise residents to avoid moving water, stay away from open fields and trees during thunderstorms, and exercise caution in flood-prone and steep areas, particularly around the Aberdare Ranges and Mount Kenya. Preparation of drainage systems is also recommended to reduce the impact of flooding.
The KMD continues to monitor the situation and provides updates through its official channels. Residents are urged to stay vigilant and follow safety guidelines.
