Medical Services Principal Secretary Dr. Ouma Oluga held a consultative meeting with a Japanese delegation led by Ambassador Matsuura Hiroshi at Afya House in Nairobi, as the two countries moved to strengthen their long-standing bilateral cooperation in the health sector.

The meeting reaffirmed the strong partnership between Kenya and Japan, with discussions centered on advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and building a more resilient and responsive health system.

Dr. Oluga underscored the importance of international partnerships in improving healthcare delivery, noting that collaboration with Japan continues to support Kenya’s goal of ensuring equitable access to quality health services for all citizens.

He emphasized that strengthening health systems remains a key government priority, particularly in areas of service delivery, financing, and preparedness for public health emergencies.

Ambassador Matsuura Hiroshi reiterated Japan’s commitment to supporting Kenya’s health agenda, highlighting the shared vision between the two countries on public health, innovation, and sustainable development.

The consultative session brought together senior officials from the Ministry of Health and technical experts, who explored opportunities to deepen cooperation in priority health areas.

Key discussions focused on enhancing health system resilience, strengthening the health workforce, expanding research collaboration, and improving access to essential medicines and technologies.

Both sides acknowledged the role of continued dialogue and technical cooperation in accelerating Kenya’s progress toward Universal Health Coverage.

The meeting also built on previous engagements between Kenyan and Japanese health leaders, which have emphasized joint efforts in health security, technology transfer, and capacity building.

Officials noted that sustained collaboration would enhance Kenya’s ability to respond effectively to emerging health challenges and future pandemics.

Dr. Oluga reaffirmed the government’s commitment to leveraging global partnerships to support health sector reforms aligned with national development priorities.

The meeting concluded with an agreement to deepen bilateral engagement and maintain close cooperation, reinforcing the enduring partnership between Kenya and Japan in advancing sustainable and inclusive healthcare outcomes.
