John Korir wins second consecutive Boston Marathon title after clocking 2:01:51
Kenya’s John Korir delivered a historic performance to win the Boston Marathon, clocking 2:01:52 to successfully defend his title and set a new course record. The time also propelled him to become the fifth fastest marathoner in history, capping a remarkable outing on one of the world’s most prestigious road races.
Korir broke away from a tightly packed lead group in the closing stages, unleashing a decisive surge that none of his rivals could match. He crossed the finish line unchallenged, improving on the long-standing course record and underlining his dominance in back-to-back victories.
The race unfolded at a relentless pace from the early miles, with a large lead pack maintaining aggressive splits through the halfway mark. Several contenders remained in contention deep into the race before the decisive moves began to take shape after the 30-kilometre point.
Tanzania’s Alphonce Simbu produced another strong showing to finish second in 2:02:47, marking his second consecutive runner-up finish in Boston. Simbu held firm in the chasing group but was unable to respond to Korir’s late acceleration.
Kenya’s Benson Kipruto completed the podium in third place, clocking 2:02:50 in a closely contested sprint among the leading chasers. Kipruto’s performance ensured a second Kenyan presence on the podium in a high-quality field.
Ethiopia’s Milkesha Mengesha finished fourth, having featured prominently for much of the race before fading slightly in the final kilometres as the pace intensified at the front.
Morocco’s Zouhair Talbi secured fifth place in 2:03:45, delivering one of the standout performances of the day with a strong and consistent run across the challenging Boston course.
American runner Clayton Young placed sixth, leading the home contingent with a solid performance against a stacked international field.
Great Britain’s Charles Hicks finished seventh, rounding out the top positions in a race that produced one of the fastest collective finishes in Boston Marathon history.
Korir’s victory further cements his growing status among the elite marathoners globally, with his time placing him among the fastest ever recorded over the distance. The performance is expected to elevate his standing ahead of upcoming major city marathons.
The 2026 edition of the Boston Marathon was characterized by unusually fast conditions and a highly competitive field, with multiple athletes threatening the previous course record as the race progressed.
For Kenya, the result continues a strong tradition of dominance in long-distance running, with two athletes finishing on the podium and others placing within the top ranks. The outcome reinforces the country’s depth in marathon running on the global stage.
As the marathon season unfolds, attention will now shift to upcoming major races, where Korir and his rivals are expected to renew their battles. His commanding victory in Boston sets the tone for what could be another defining year in elite marathon competition.
