Kasper Schmeichel has announced his retirement from professional football after a career spanning more than 20 years, following medical advice linked to a serious shoulder injury.

The Danish goalkeeper confirmed that ongoing complications from the injury made it impossible for him to continue competing at elite level.

Schmeichel’s shoulder problem involved multiple structural issues, including damage to ligaments and tendons, which required prolonged treatment and rehabilitation.

Doctors reportedly advised that recovery would be lengthy and uncertain, with the risk of further complications if he attempted to return to competitive football.

The decision brings an end to his final spell in professional football, where he most recently played for Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.

At Celtic, he quickly established himself as a key player, bringing experience, leadership, and consistency to the squad during domestic campaigns.

Before moving to Scotland, Schmeichel built a highly successful career in English football, most notably with Leicester City, where he spent over a decade as first-choice goalkeeper.

His time at Leicester is remembered for the historic 2015–16 Premier League title win, one of the greatest underdog triumphs in football history.

He also played a key role in Leicester’s FA Cup victory in 2021, further cementing his legacy at the club.

Earlier in his career, Schmeichel had spells at Manchester City, Leeds United, Notts County, Nice, and Anderlecht, gaining experience across several European leagues.

On the international stage, he earned over 100 caps for Denmark and represented his country in major tournaments including the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship.

One of his standout international moments came at Euro 2020, where Denmark reached the semi-finals in a remarkable and emotional tournament campaign.

Schmeichel is the son of former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, and together they are regarded as one of football’s most iconic father-son duos.

His retirement marks the end of a distinguished era for one of Europe’s most consistent and respected goalkeepers.
