Kirinyaga Senator Kamau Murango has been ranked as Kenya's best-performing senator in the latest InfoTrak CountyTrak Performance Index 2026, topping the national rankings for the execution of legislative, oversight and representative roles. The survey, which assessed public perception of elected leaders across the country, placed Murango ahead of his colleagues in the Senate based on his overall performance rating.
Murango recorded a 69 per cent approval rating to emerge first nationally. Nyandarua Senator John Methu followed closely in second place with 68 per cent, while Murang'a Senator Joe Nyutu ranked third after scoring 65 per cent. Nandi Senator Samson Cherarkey and Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot completed the top five with 64 per cent and 63 per cent, respectively.
According to InfoTrak Research and Consulting, the CountyTrak Performance Index surveyed 87,286 respondents across all 47 counties, covering every constituency and ward between January and April 2026. The research sought to gauge citizens' satisfaction with the performance of elected leaders in fulfilling their constitutional responsibilities.
The survey evaluated senators based on several indicators, including legislative effectiveness, oversight of county governments, accessibility to constituents, responsiveness to public concerns, communication, visibility and accountability in the use of public resources. Respondents rated leaders on a scale of one to ten before the scores were converted into percentage performance ratings.
Under the Constitution, the Senate is mandated to represent and protect the interests of counties, participate in the law-making process by considering Bills affecting county governments, determine the allocation of national revenue among counties and exercise oversight over funds allocated to devolved units. These constitutional functions formed the basis of the performance assessment.
The latest rankings come at a time when political activity is gathering pace ahead of the 2027 General Election, with performance surveys increasingly shaping public debate on leadership and accountability. InfoTrak said the findings reflect public perception and are intended to provide an independent measure of how Kenyans rate the performance of their elected leaders.
