Kakamega Homeboyz defender Silas Abungana who died in hospital earlier today after alleged sustaining injuries from his close family member

Kakamega Homeboyz FC and the Kenyan football community are mourning the death of defender Silas Shihemi Abungana, who passed away on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, while receiving treatment at Kakamega County General Hospital.

Abungana reportedly sustained serious head injuries during a violent domestic dispute at his family home in Shinyalu, Kakamega County, involving his 21-year-old younger brother, Denmark Muchiti. The altercation is said to have started after Abungana’s new wife went to collect firewood, escalating into a physical confrontation.

He was rushed to hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries despite intensive medical care. Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, and efforts are underway to trace the suspect.

The 25-year-old had recently been featuring regularly for Homeboyz in the FKF Premier League, having joined the club earlier this season from Shabana FC.

Homeboyz FC released a statement appealing for privacy for Abungana’s family, teammates, and officials during this difficult time.

The news has sent shockwaves through the Kenyan football community, with fellow players, rival clubs, and fans expressing condolences on social media.

Clubs including Mathare United, AFC Leopards, and Nairobi United have shared messages honoring Abungana’s contributions on the pitch and mourning his untimely passing.

Abungana’s death has also reignited discussions about player welfare and off-field safety, highlighting the personal challenges athletes may face beyond the football field.

The FKF Premier League community continues to grieve the loss of a promising defender whose career and life were cut tragically short.

Authorities have urged anyone with information about the incident to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
