John Obi Mikel has launched a strong criticism of Arsenal F.C., questioning the team’s style of play and their reliance on set pieces during the ongoing title race.
Mikel, a retired Nigerian international who previously starred for Chelsea F.C., made the remarks during an interview with talkSPORT.
The former midfielder, who was part of Chelsea’s squad that won the UEFA Champions League, argued that Arsenal’s performances are not convincing despite the club’s strong position in the league standings.
Mikel suggested Arsenal could still drop important points later in the season, especially in difficult away fixtures including a trip to face Manchester City F.C..
“Arsenal will still drop points. They still have to travel to Man City, and the history of Arsenal tells you that they will be messing it up,” Mikel said.
The former Chelsea midfielder also defended the defensive tactics used during the era of manager José Mourinho.
“Did we park the bus with Mourinho when we won the league? Yes, but at least we won legally!” he said.
Mikel then questioned the tactical approach of Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, particularly regarding the team’s reliance on corner kicks.
“Arteta's Arsenal solely depends on corner kicks! You have spent almost €1 billion, Mikel Arteta! And you are telling me the only way you can win games is through corner kicks?!” he added.
According to the former Nigeria captain, Arsenal’s victories have not always been attractive despite their results this season.
“They are winning ugly! The only reason why Arsenal fans are not complaining is because they are top of the league,” Mikel said.
He also questioned the creativity of several attacking players within the Arsenal squad.
“We don't see Saka, Eze, Martinelli or Ødegaard being creative because they want to depend on corner kicks!” he added.
Despite the criticism, Arsenal have been among the most effective teams in the league from set pieces this season, with several goals coming from rehearsed corner routines.
The team’s success in dead-ball situations has been widely linked to specialized tactical preparation under Arteta’s coaching staff.
