Former Liverpool defender and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has criticized Arsenal’s decision to start Viktor Gyokeres, arguing that the Swedish striker should not be in the lineup when other attacking options are available.
Speaking after Arsenal’s 4‑1 win over Aston Villa, Carragher said: “Gyokeres shouldn’t be starting for Arsenal when they’ve got players like Gabriel Jesus. He’s a better player, and Arsenal need their top-quality forwards leading the line.”
Carragher highlighted the impact of substitutes in the match, noting how Jesus came off the bench and scored shortly after replacing Gyokeres. He added: “Jesus makes a difference when he’s on the pitch. Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus are players who can change the game instantly.”
The pundit’s comments follow a relatively quiet performance from Gyokeres, who failed to score before being substituted in the 77th minute. Carragher suggested that the Swedish forward has yet to fully adapt to the demands of the Premier League.
“Gyokeres has shown glimpses, but he hasn’t hit the ground running the way Arsenal would have hoped,” Carragher said. “They need their most potent attacking options starting, especially in key matches.”
The remarks have sparked debate among fans and analysts about Arsenal’s attacking strategy, with many questioning whether Gyokeres should continue to start over more experienced and dynamic options like Jesus and Havertz.
