ODM Special Delegates Conference settings underway at Jamhuri grounds

Preparations are underway for the Orange Democratic Movement’s (ODM) Special National Delegates Convention (NDC) at Jamhuri Grounds in Nairobi. Party leaders say the gathering aims to consolidate leadership and reaffirm internal governance structures.

ODM National Chairperson Gladys Wanga confirmed that delegates from all 47 counties have been notified and mobilised, with logistical arrangements and briefings ongoing ahead of the convention.

The leadership at Jamhuri Grounds frames the event as the legitimate organ for party decision-making, intended to promote unity and address organisational priorities following months of internal friction.

Meanwhile, a rival faction, aligned with former Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna and other leaders, has announced plans for a parallel gathering on the same day, rejecting the legitimacy of the Jamhuri Grounds event.

The official ODM leadership dismissed the alternative meeting as politically motivated and lacking constitutional authority, warning members against participation.

The schism reflects deep divisions that have surfaced since the death of long-time party leader Raila Odinga in October 2025, particularly around leadership succession and internal democratic processes.

Acting Secretary-General Catherine Omanyo said the special delegates convention follows constitutional protocols, including required notice periods and proper delegate notifications, with an agenda focused on governance and ratification of executive decisions.

Analysts warn that competing gatherings could create unrest within the party, with both factions seeking to assert control over delegates and influence the party’s future direction.

Observers say the outcome of March 27 could shape ODM’s cohesion and strategic posture ahead of the 2027 general elections, with leadership credibility and party unity at stake.

As preparations continue, both groups are mobilising supporters, and the political scene in Nairobi is set for a critical showdown that could redefine one of Kenya’s largest opposition parties.
