English football veteran James Milner has announced his retirement from professional football, bringing the curtain down on one of the most remarkable and enduring careers in the history of the game. The former England international called time on his playing career at the age of 40 after spending 24 years competing at the highest level of English football.

Milner retires as the all-time appearance holder in the Premier League, having played 658 matches in the competition. The milestone cemented his place among the league's greatest servants, surpassing the long-standing record previously held by Gareth Barry.

Born in Leeds in January 1986, Milner began his professional journey with Leeds United in 2002. He made his senior debut at just 16 years old and quickly emerged as one of the brightest young talents in English football, earning widespread recognition for his maturity, versatility and work ethic.

After leaving Leeds, Milner enjoyed successful spells with Newcastle United and Aston Villa, where he established himself as one of the most reliable midfielders in the Premier League. His consistent performances eventually earned him a move to one of England's top clubs.

In 2010, Milner joined Manchester City and became an important part of a squad that helped transform the club into a dominant force in English football. During his time at City, he won two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and a League Cup while playing a key role in several successful campaigns.

The midfielder moved to Liverpool FC in 2015 and enjoyed some of the most memorable years of his career under manager Jürgen Klopp. His leadership, experience and professionalism made him one of the most respected figures in the dressing room.

Milner helped Liverpool win the UEFA Champions League in 2019 before playing a significant role in the club's historic Premier League triumph in 2020. The league title ended Liverpool's 30-year wait for a top-flight championship and remains one of the defining achievements of his career.

At international level, Milner earned 61 appearances for England national football team. He represented his country at the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups as well as the 2012 and 2016 European Championships before retiring from international football.

Throughout his career, Milner earned a reputation as one of the most versatile players in the modern game. He successfully played in central midfield, on both wings, as a full-back and in several other positions, often stepping into unfamiliar roles whenever required by his team.

His final professional chapter came at Brighton & Hove Albion, where he spent the closing years of his career. Despite his age, he remained a valuable member of the squad and continued to set an example through his fitness, discipline and commitment.

Across more than two decades, Milner collected numerous honours including three Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy, two FA Cups, two League Cups, a FIFA Club World Cup and several other domestic and international accolades. His trophy haul reflected a career defined by consistency and success.

Following the retirement announcement, tributes poured in from former teammates, managers, clubs and supporters across the football world. Many praised his professionalism, longevity and dedication, describing him as one of the finest role models the sport has produced.

Milner leaves football as one of the Premier League's greatest ever servants and one of the most respected players of his generation. His record-breaking 658 Premier League appearances, combined with his trophy collection and reputation for excellence, ensure that his legacy will remain firmly etched in English football history for years to come.
