Israel has officially recognised Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state, becoming the first country to do so since the region declared independence from Somalia in 1991.
The landmark decision marks a major diplomatic shift in the Horn of Africa and a significant milestone in Somaliland’s decades-long push for international recognition. The recognition was formalised after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi signed a mutual declaration endorsing statehood and bilateral relations.
The move was reportedly made at the initiative of former United States President Donald Trump, who has been associated with efforts to reshape diplomatic ties involving Israel.
Israeli officials said the decision reflects a broader strategy to strengthen political, economic and security partnerships beyond the Middle East, particularly in strategically important regions. Israel is expected to establish formal diplomatic relations with Somaliland, opening the door for cooperation in areas such as agriculture, health, technology and trade.
For Somaliland, the announcement represents a breakthrough after more than three decades of operating as a self-governing entity with its own elected government, security forces and currency, despite lacking international recognition.
Leaders in Hargeisa described the development as validation of the region’s stability, democratic governance and peaceful record compared to much of the wider region. The move, however, has sparked strong reactions from Somalia, which maintains that Somaliland remains part of its sovereign territory.
Somalia’s government reiterated its commitment to territorial integrity, while several regional and international actors expressed concern that unilateral recognition could heighten diplomatic tensions in the Horn of Africa. Analysts say Israel’s recognition could encourage debate among other countries over Somaliland’s status, though widespread recognition is likely to face resistance.
The development nonetheless reshapes diplomatic dynamics in the region and places Somaliland firmly back on the international agenda.
