ODM removes Edwin Sifuna as party Secretary General

The Orange Democratic Movement has removed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna from his position as Secretary General following a National Executive Committee meeting held in Mombasa on February 11, 2026. The decision marks a significant shift in the party’s top leadership and comes after weeks of escalating internal tensions.

Party officials indicated that the move was aimed at safeguarding unity and reinforcing internal discipline. The NEC resolved that changes in the secretariat were necessary to protect the party’s cohesion during a period of heightened political realignment.

Sifuna’s removal follows sustained pressure from senior party figures who accused him of publicly contradicting party positions and undermining collective decisions. The disagreement is understood to centre on ODM’s strategic posture toward the national government and internal leadership direction.

Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi, a senior party member, had publicly called for disciplinary action against Sifuna in recent days, intensifying the standoff within the party. The calls reflected growing unease among some leaders over what they described as persistent dissent within the secretariat.

Reports indicate that Sifuna was absent from the NEC session that formalised his removal, with his absence said to have been formally communicated. His ouster was among several decisions taken during the meeting as the party reorganised sections of its leadership structure.

An acting Secretary General is expected to assume the role pending further consultations within the party. ODM insiders say the interim arrangement is intended to ensure continuity in administrative operations while broader consultations continue.

Despite the removal from office, Sifuna’s membership in ODM remains intact. Previous statements from the senator suggested that while leadership roles may change, party affiliation is governed by separate internal processes.

The leadership changes unfold against a backdrop of broader realignments within ODM, as factions debate the party’s long-term strategy and alliances. Political observers note that how the party manages the transition could have implications for its internal stability ahead of the next electoral cycle.

The developments underscore persistent strains within one of Kenya’s largest opposition parties, highlighting the delicate balance between discipline, dissent and unity in a shifting political landscape.
