Hotel Intern's Mysterious Death In Upper Hill Sparks Police Probe

Police have launched investigations into the death of 22-year-old hotel intern Margaret Wambui, who died after falling from the rooftop of the 22-storey Altura Apartments in Nairobi's Upper Hill area. Her body was discovered on a neighbouring plot in the early hours of Sunday, prompting detectives from Kilimani Police Station to begin inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Wambui entered the apartment complex at about 10 p.m. on Saturday after leaving her home in Kasarani. Police believe she proceeded to the rooftop, where she is reported to have been taking photographs. A security guard who had seen her on the rooftop told investigators he briefly left the area before the incident occurred and did not witness the fall.
When officers visited the scene, they recovered Wambui's handbag, identification documents, mobile phone and other personal belongings from the rooftop. Her body, which was found on an adjacent property, bore injuries consistent with a fall from a significant height. It was later transferred to the Nairobi Funeral Home pending a post-mortem examination.
Investigators are now reviewing CCTV footage from the apartment building and surrounding premises while recording statements from security personnel, building management and other potential witnesses. Detectives are also reconstructing Wambui's final movements to establish what transpired before her death.
According to her family, Wambui had informed them that she was reporting for her internship at a hotel on Saturday evening. However, she never arrived at her workplace. Concern grew after repeated phone calls went unanswered, with one of her friends later informing the family that someone else had answered her phone and directed them to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations offices in Kilimani.
The family has firmly rejected suggestions that Wambui may have taken her own life, insisting she had not shown any signs of emotional distress or behaviour that would indicate suicidal intentions. They have called on investigators to conduct a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation to determine whether she accidentally fell or whether foul play was involved.
The post-mortem examination is expected to provide crucial forensic evidence on the cause of death and help detectives establish the sequence of events leading to the fatal incident. Police have not ruled out any line of inquiry as investigations continue.
