Manchester City kicked off their UEFA Champions League campaign with a 2-0 win over Napoli at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday night.
The Italian side were reduced to ten men early in the game when captain Giovanni Di Lorenzo was sent off in the 21st minute for a last-man foul on Erling Haaland. Despite their numerical advantage, City had to wait until the second half to make the breakthrough. Haaland struck in the 56th minute to score his 50th goal in the competition, setting a new record as the fastest player to reach the milestone in just 49 appearances.
Jeremy Doku sealed the victory in the 65th minute with a fine solo effort, ensuring Pep Guardiola’s men began their league Stage campaign with maximum points. Napoli goalkeeper Vanja Milinković-Savić had earlier kept his side in the game with a string of saves, but City’s relentless pressure eventually proved too much.
