Grimsby Shock Manchester United in Penalty Thriller to Advance in EFL Cup

Grimsby Town pulled off a stunning upset by eliminating Manchester United in the second round of the EFL Cup after a dramatic 2-2 draw and a nerve-wracking 12-11 penalty shootout win on Wednesday night.
United looked destined to crash out when Charles Vernam and Tom Warren struck for Grimsby in the first half, but Brentford loanee Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire’s late equaliser forced the tie into penalties.
The shootout turned into an unforgettable marathon. Both sides held their nerve through the first 11 rounds, with even goalkeepers Andre Onana and Grimsby’s counterpart converting from the spot. But in sudden death, Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo fired his effort off-target, allowing Domonic Burns to step up and send Grimsby through to the third round.
The result marks one of the most dramatic nights in Grimsby’s history, while piling early-season pressure on Manchester United, who now face questions over their squad depth and mentality after being knocked out by a League Two side.
