The government has announced it will begin paying social health contributions for 1.5 million vulnerable citizens starting next week.

According to President William Ruto, SHA contributions are equitable at 2.75 per cent of income, which will enable the government to get enough funds to contribute to those who have no ability to pay.

Speaking during a meeting with grassroots leaders from Turkana County at State House, Nairobi, on Tuesday, the Head of State said, unlike NHIF, which covered those who could afford and those who had jobs, SHA is for all Kenyans.

The President further noted that the payments will be sent to specific hospitals, not counties as before, in an effort to ensure the medical facilities can provide quality healthcare

The move is part of the government's broader strategy to achieve universal health coverage (UHC) and ensure that no Kenyan is left behind in accessing essential medical services.

He cautioned dispensaries, health centres, and sub-county hospitals against charging patients for outpatient services, saying the government has set aside Ksh 21 billion for these, and it will pay through SHA

Meanwhile, in a brief statement released by the Head of Special Projects and Creative Economy at the Executive Office of the President, Dennis Itumbi, the government has already identified the select group of Kenyans set to benefit from the government’s directive.
