President William Ruto has announced that a thousand hospitals whose licenses were revoked for attempting to defraud the Social Health Authority (SHA) will soon face prosecution.
Speaking at the installation of Bishop John Kiplimo Lelei in Kapsabet, President Ruto stated that the withdrawal of licenses is the first step in ensuring accountability. This will be followed by a comprehensive process of surcharging for illegal payments and ultimately prosecuting those involved.
The President's remarks align with a massive ongoing crackdown on corruption within the health sector, which has already led to the suspension of numerous health facilities and the rejection of fraudulent claims worth billions of shillings.
Separately, Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has confirmed that several hospital officials and staff involved in fraudulent claims and payments under the Social Health Authority (SHA) will be arrested next week.
Speaking to the press, CS Duale revealed that ongoing government investigations have uncovered widespread fraud, including the submission of fictitious claims, billing for services never rendered, and other schemes aimed at defrauding the newly established health fund.
The Ministry of Health has already taken significant action in recent months, suspending and closing numerous facilities flagged for fraudulent activities.
The government has also rejected billions of shillings in suspicious claims as it works to protect resources allocated for universal healthcare.
