The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is reportedly in negotiations with French coach Hervé Renard to take over as head coach of the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Sources say discussions are ongoing regarding the length of the contract, the composition of Renard’s backroom staff, and other terms before a final decision is reached. The appointment comes after the sacking of former coach Otto Addo just weeks before Ghana’s World Cup campaign begins.

Renard, who most recently departed his role as Saudi Arabia’s head coach, has extensive experience in African football. He famously led Zambia to their 2012 Africa Cup of Nations title and guided Ivory Coast to the 2015 tournament crown. His previous experience in Africa and familiarity with local football structures make him a leading candidate for the Black Stars role.

The GFA faces pressure to make a swift appointment, with Ghana scheduled to play warm‑up friendlies in May ahead of the World Cup. The team will open their Group L campaign on 17 June against Panama, before facing England and Croatia. A timely coaching decision is seen as critical to ensuring the squad is fully prepared for the tournament.

Local reports suggest that the GFA has already reached out to Renard’s representatives, with initial discussions described as positive and constructive. Details under negotiation reportedly include performance incentives, squad selection autonomy, and the ability to bring in key members of his coaching team.

Ghana’s coaching vacancy has attracted attention from several experienced coaches, but Renard’s name stands out due to his proven record in African tournaments. His tactical acumen and ability to motivate players in high-pressure environments are seen as vital for Ghana’s hopes of advancing beyond the group stage.

Enock Kobina Essel, a football analyst based in Accra, described the potential appointment as “a strategic move” for Ghana. Essel noted that Renard’s experience in World Cups and continental competitions could provide the stability and leadership the Black Stars currently lack.

While negotiations continue, there is no official confirmation from either the GFA or Renard himself. Ghanaian football fans have been eagerly awaiting news, with social media abuzz with speculation about how soon the new coach might be announced.

The coming weeks will be decisive for Ghana’s preparations. The GFA has indicated that a final decision on the head coach could be made within one to two weeks, giving Renard just enough time to familiarise himself with the squad and implement his strategies before the World Cup kicks off.
