Germany have ended Julian Nagelsmann's tenure as national team head coach following the country's disappointing FIFA World Cup campaign, with the decision reportedly reached after talks between the coach and officials from the German Football Association (DFB).

The move comes days after Germany were eliminated in the Round of 32 by Paraguay on penalties following a 1-1 draw, extending the nation's struggles at the World Cup. The defeat marked another major setback for the four-time world champions, who had also suffered group-stage exits in 2018 and 2022.

According to German newspaper Bild, Nagelsmann met DFB officials for several hours at the federation's headquarters in Frankfurt before both parties agreed to end their working relationship. Although the coach had initially ruled out resigning after the World Cup exit, the meeting reportedly resulted in a mutual decision for him to leave.

The DFB had not officially announced Nagelsmann's departure at the time of the reports, but multiple German and international media outlets said the separation was imminent. Reports indicate the 38-year-old is expected to receive a severance package equivalent to around one year's salary.

Nagelsmann was appointed Germany coach in September 2023 after the dismissal of Hansi Flick, becoming one of the youngest managers to lead the national team. He guided Germany to the quarter-finals of UEFA Euro 2024 and subsequently signed a contract extension running until 2028.

Despite early optimism surrounding his appointment, Germany failed to build momentum heading into the 2026 World Cup. Their elimination in the first knockout round intensified criticism over the team's performances and reignited debate about the future direction of the national side.

Former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp has emerged as the leading candidate to succeed Nagelsmann. Reports indicate Klopp is open to taking charge of the German national team despite currently serving as Red Bull's Head of Global Football.

German media report that Klopp's agreement with Red Bull contains provisions that could allow him to leave should the Germany job become available. The national team role has long been viewed as one of the few positions capable of luring him back into full-time coaching.

The DFB is expected to begin formal discussions over the appointment of a new head coach as it prepares for the UEFA Euro 2028 qualifying campaign. Other names have also been mentioned as possible alternatives should negotiations with Klopp not progress.

An official announcement regarding Nagelsmann's departure and his successor is expected from the DFB in the coming days, with Klopp widely regarded as the frontrunner to lead Germany into its next international cycle.
