Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Friday joined former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang’i, Peoples Liberation Party leader Martha Karua and other opposition leaders in Kigumo Constituency, Murang’a County, where they attended the burial of the late Mrs Jane Wanjiku Kamau, mother to Kigumo MP Hon. Jamleck Kamau, and later acknowledged greetings from residents at Muthithi Shopping Centre.
In his remarks, Gachagua cited Romans 12:15, saying, “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn,” as he conveyed condolences on behalf of his family and political colleagues. He acknowledged the pain of losing a mother, noting that no one is ever fully prepared for such a loss, and urged the family to draw strength from faith during the difficult period. “During this difficult time, may Almighty God grant you peace and strength. He will wipe away your tears and provide comfort in abundance,” he said.
The burial brought together several opposition figures, including Narc-Kenya leader Martha Karua, JB Muturi, and other elected leaders, who expressed solidarity with the bereaved family and prayed for comfort.
Following the funeral service, Gachagua, Matiang’i, and the leaders proceeded to Muthithi Shopping Centre, where they interacted with residents who had gathered to see them. Gachagua said the brief engagement was part of ongoing public outreach, emphasizing that leaders remain committed to listening to the voices of the people and addressing their concerns. “Better days are ahead,” he told residents.
The visit comes amid heightened political activity by the United Opposition, which has intensified grassroots outreach in Central Kenya in recent weeks. Gachagua has positioned himself as a leading voice in the opposition alliance, frequently criticizing the Kenya Kwanza administration for alleged intolerance and misuse of state power against dissenting leaders.
His remarks follow a violent disruption at Witima ACK Church in Othaya, Nyeri County, last month, where teargas was fired during a service he attended, injuring worshippers and damaging property. Addressing the incident earlier this week, Gachagua said the attack was deliberate and politically motivated. “This was not an ordinary attack. It was an assassination attempt planned by the government,” he claimed.
He added that the perpetrators had been identified, saying, “We have the names of the officers who planned and executed this attack, and they must be arrested, disarmed and taken to court.” Gachagua warned that failure to act would have consequences, stating, “If no action is taken, we will mobilise peaceful protests across the country to defend our democracy.”
Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, a key figure in the United Opposition, condemned the church incident, saying, “No leader should silence dissent or crush alternative views for the country.” He further criticized the use of force against opposition leaders, emphasizing that political competition should not be handled through intimidation and violence.
Clergy leaders in Nyeri also condemned the attack, stating in a joint statement that “the church is a sacred place and must never be turned into a battleground for political scores.”
In response, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said investigations were ongoing, noting that “any misuse of force by security officers will be dealt with in accordance with the law.”
The United Opposition has formally petitioned the Inspector General of Police, demanding accountability and guarantees for the safety of political leaders and civilians.
As Gachagua and his allies continue their public engagements in Murang’a and other counties, they insist their message remains focused on listening to wananchi and pushing for political reforms.
Concluding the visit, Gachagua reiterated a message of hope and unity, telling supporters and residents that despite current challenges, “better days are ahead.”
