FOOTBALL MATTERS: Carlo Ancelloti sentenced to one year imprisonment

Brazil’s newly appointed head coach, Carlo Ancelotti, has been handed a one-year prison sentence and a fine of €386,361 by a Madrid court for failing to pay taxes on image rights earnings during the 2014 financial year.
The ruling was delivered by Section 30 of the Madrid Provincial Court, which found the former Real Madrid manager guilty of concealing income derived from his image rights while he was employed by the Spanish club.
Ancelotti, who officially left Real Madrid at the end of the 2024–25 La Liga season to take charge of the Brazilian national team, was also facing similar charges for the 2015 tax year. However, he was acquitted of that offence after the court ruled that prosecutors failed to prove he spent sufficient time in Spain that year to warrant tax obligations. The Italian tactician had moved to London in May 2015 after being dismissed by Real Madrid.
Despite the sentence, Ancelotti is unlikely to serve time behind bars. Under Spanish law, prison terms under two years for non-violent and first-time offences are typically suspended, especially when the offender has no prior criminal record.
Ancelotti, a highly respected figure in world football, has yet to comment publicly on the
ruling.
