A five-storey building under construction in Ruaka, Kiambu county collapsed on Thursday morning.

According to Kiambu County Governor Kimani Wamatangi who visited the scene, the building which came down at 3.30 am killed two people whose residential home is adjacent to the site.

The two, a man aged 73 and his wife said to be in her 50s were asleep during the incident.

Their three daughters escaped death by a whisker after they were rescued.

Governor Wamatangi while addressing media regretted that cases of buildings collapsing in the country had become common hence ordered an immediate suspension of the board in charge of Land, Housing, Physical Planning and Urban Development in the county.

He said his team will traverse every corner of Kiambu to ensure all buildings under construction comply with the set standard.

"We will demolish all buildings that have not been properly built,” he said.

He revealed that initial investigations have shown the contractor did not comply with construction regulations.

The incident comes days after another seven-storey building collapsed at Seasons area in Kasarani, Nairobi County.

Three people have so far been confirmed dead from the incident while six others have been rescued from the rubble.

Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja after visiting the scene put on notice property developers violating building regulations.

Last week another eight-story building collapsed in Kwa-Ndege, Tassia, Embakasi killing one person.
