EXCLUSIVE: Congo Republic Strike Late to Hold Sudan in CHAN Group D Opener

Congo Republic and Sudan shared the spoils in a dramatic 1-1 draw in their African Nations Championship (CHAN) Group D opener on Tuesday evening. The match, played on August 5, 2025, saw Sudan take the lead in the 29th minute through M. A. Hussein, who capitalized on a defensive lapse to put his side ahead before halftime.
Congo Republic fought hard in the second half, pushing for an equalizer as Sudan looked to defend their narrow lead. Their persistence paid off in the 86th minute when C. Ekongo found the back of the net, leveling the score to the delight of the home supporters.
Beranger Itoua of Congo Republic was named Player of the Match for his outstanding performance, earning a rating of 8.2. The result leaves both teams with a point each as the race for qualification from Group D begins to take shape.
