Bayer Leverkusen have confirmed the dismissal of head coach Erik ten Hag, just two months after his appointment. The Dutchman was informed of the decision on Monday morning following a poor start to the Bundesliga campaign.
Ten Hag, who took charge on July 1, oversaw only two league matches with Leverkusen. His side suffered a 2–1 home defeat to Hoffenheim before squandering a 3–1 lead in a 3–3 draw against ten-man Werder Bremen. The results left the club’s hierarchy deeply concerned about the team’s direction.
According to German media, Leverkusen’s board decided on Sunday to part ways with the 55-year-old, with the decision made official the following day. Assistant coach Rogier Meijer, who joined from NEC Nijmegen in the summer, will take charge of the team on an interim basis.
Ten Hag’s short tenure at the BayArena now ranks among the most abrupt managerial stints in Bundesliga history, ending just 62 days after his arrival. Leverkusen will now begin the search for a permanent successor as they look to stabilise their season.
