Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has challenged Kenyan institutions to embrace renewable energy as a strategic move to lower electricity bills nationwide. Commissioning a solar-powered hybrid system at the Nairobi Remand and Allocation Maximum Security Prison, Wandayi noted that transitioning to green energy not only combats frequent power outages but also fuels eco-friendly economic growth.
"Renewable energy is both reliable and cost-effective," Wandayi stated, praising the prison’s new solar push.
The project, funded by the European Union and UNODC, has already improved daily operations and inmate welfare. According to the development partners, securing reliable power strengthens Kenya's justice system by protecting the constitutional rights of those in custody.
Joining the event, Correctional Services PS Dr. Salome Beacco underscored the human element, stating that sustainable infrastructure restores inmate dignity and sparks innovation.
