Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez is under investigation by the Football Association after being linked to a betting promotion with Argentine platform Bplay. The FA is examining whether the player’s involvement violates rules that prohibit professional footballers in England from personally endorsing gambling activities.

Reports indicate that Martínez has acted as a brand ambassador for Bplay for over 18 months. The betting company has used his image across marketing campaigns and social media platforms targeting the Argentine market. This promotional work has drawn scrutiny because it could conflict with FA regulations.

Under FA rules, players are not allowed to advertise or promote gambling companies in a personal capacity, especially when the platform offers betting markets on competitions in which the player is involved. Aston Villa competes in the Premier League, FA Cup, and domestic cup tournaments, all of which fall under the FA’s jurisdiction.

Bplay’s press release highlighted Martínez’s role as a key ambassador, showing him in promotional content for the company. The FA is now reviewing whether these activities breach Rule E8, which governs conduct related to gambling and betting for participants in English football.

Neither Aston Villa nor Martínez has publicly responded to the investigation. The goalkeeper continues to train and play for the club while the FA assesses the situation. Officials have emphasized that no formal charges or sanctions have been issued at this stage.

The case has reignited debate over the relationship between footballers and betting companies, as clubs are allowed to display gambling sponsors on shirts and stadium advertising, but individual player endorsements remain restricted. Experts note that the FA has been strict in recent years with any potential conflicts of interest.

If the FA finds a violation, Martínez could face disciplinary measures similar to those seen in previous cases, which may include fines or suspension from FA‑regulated competitions. The governing body has not yet indicated a timeline for the conclusion of the investigation.

The situation has captured attention both in England and Argentina, highlighting the growing scrutiny of professional athletes’ involvement in gambling promotions and the delicate balance clubs and players must maintain to comply with FA rules.
