Crystal Palace Sell Captain Guehi Amid Squad Turmoil

Crystal Palace have confirmed the sale of captain Marc Guehi to Manchester City, with personal terms agreed and a reported fee of around £20 million. The England centre-back is set to undergo a medical as the move nears completion, marking a major departure for Selhurst Park.

The transfer has sparked tension within the club, with manager Oliver Glasner openly criticising the board for the timing of the sale, which was confirmed just a day before Palace’s Premier League clash against Sunderland. Glasner described the squad as “abandoned completely,” citing limited senior options and a reliance on inexperienced substitutes.

Guehi’s exit follows the summer sale of Eberechi Eze to Arsenal, a move that already reshaped the team’s attacking options. These departures have raised concerns over squad depth and Palace’s ability to compete consistently in the league.

Striker Jean‑Philippe Mateta is reportedly open to a move this January, with Juventus among the clubs expressing interest, suggesting that further changes to the squad could be imminent.

Despite the upheaval, Palace remain in the Premier League and their league position is determined by results on the pitch rather than transfers alone. There is no official confirmation of relegation, though the team’s recent form has intensified speculation.

Chairman Steve Parish has retained Glasner until the end of the season, even as fans and pundits question the club’s transfer strategy and long-term planning.

The coming weeks of the January window will be crucial, as Palace look to stabilise the squad and respond to the challenges posed by recent key departures.
