Coalition Rift Deepens as ODM Suspends UDA Talks

ODM suspends coalition talks with President Ruto’s UDA Following a tense meeting chaired by Oburu Odinga.
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has suspended coalition talks with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), deepening political tensions within Kenya’s evolving pre-2027 landscape.
The decision was reached during a high-level meeting of ODM’s Central Management Committee, where party leaders resolved to halt all ongoing negotiations on a possible pre-election alliance with the ruling party.
At the centre of the dispute is a growing disagreement over electoral strategy, particularly the contentious issue of zoning. ODM has accused UDA of pushing for open competition across all regions, a move the party argues undermines established political strongholds and weakens the basis for cooperation.
Senior ODM figures have also raised concern over what they describe as aggressive political posturing by UDA leaders, including public declarations of intent to field candidates in regions traditionally aligned to ODM.
The suspension signals a shift in ODM’s immediate priorities, with the party now turning its focus toward internal mobilisation and strengthening its grassroots structures ahead of the next General Election.
The development casts uncertainty over the future of the so-called broad-based government arrangement that had brought the two parties into a working relationship following a period of heightened political unrest.
Although the move does not amount to a complete political split, it effectively freezes structured engagement between the two parties, placing any future cooperation on hold.
ODM has indicated that renewed talks would depend on respect for political territories and a clearer framework for collaboration, setting potentially tough conditions for re-engagement.
The fallout is expected to influence broader political alignments, as parties begin recalibrating strategies and alliances in the run-up to 2027.
In the short term, the decision highlights widening cracks within Kenya’s political establishment, pointing to a possible return to more competitive and fragmented electoral dynamics.
