Chelsea F.C. have been fined £10.75 million by the Premier League after an investigation found the club breached financial reporting rules during the ownership of Roman Abramovich.
The violations relate to undisclosed payments made between 2011 and 2018 to players, agents and third parties that were not properly recorded in the club’s financial accounts.
As part of the sanctions, Chelsea received a one-year first-team transfer ban, but the punishment has been suspended for two years and will only be enforced if the club commits further breaches within that period.
The club was also handed a nine-month ban on registering academy players from other English clubs after regulators found violations related to youth recruitment rules.
The investigation began after the club’s new ownership group, led by Todd Boehly, self-reported potential historical irregularities in 2022 following the takeover of the club.
League authorities said Chelsea’s cooperation and early disclosure were considered mitigating factors during the disciplinary process.
Despite the reporting failures, investigators concluded that the club would not have breached the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules even if the payments had been declared correctly.
The case brings to a close a lengthy probe into financial dealings at Stamford Bridge during the Abramovich era.
