Gor Mahia FC has officially named former Ghana national team boss Charles Kwablan “CK” Akonnor as their new head coach on a two-year contract, effective immediately. The announcement was made on Thursday, marking a major step for the Kenyan Premier League champions as they gear up for the 2025/26 season.
Akonnor, a former Black Stars captain and coach, brings a wealth of experience from both his playing days in Europe and his managerial stints with top clubs in Ghana, including Hearts of Oak, Ashanti Gold, and Asante Kotoko. He also managed the Ghana national team between 2020 and 2021, overseeing their qualification campaigns for both the Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA World Cup.
The 50-year-old tactician becomes the first Ghanaian to manage Gor Mahia and is expected to lead the club’s charge in both domestic and continental competitions. He will be joined by fellow Ghanaian Bismark Kobby-Mensah as his assistant and Ben Owu as the goalkeeping coach.
Club chairman Ambrose Rachier welcomed the new technical team, saying the appointment reflects Gor Mahia’s commitment to building a competitive squad capable of making a strong impact in the CAF Champions League. “We believe Akonnor’s international experience and leadership will be crucial in driving the club’s ambitions forward,” Rachier said.
Akonnor is set to begin work immediately as pre-season preparations kick off in Nairobi. His primary task will be to strengthen the squad and implement a modern playing style, with the goal of reclaiming regional dominance and ending Gor Mahia’s long continental trophy drought.
