Last moments of the slain Kasipul MP Ong'ondo Were
New details have emerged about the final moments of slain Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong'ondo Were, with investigators now focusing on claims that his own bodyguard may have played a role in planning the assassination that stunned the country.
The legislator was shot dead on the evening of April 30, 2025, in Nairobi after gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on his vehicle while it was stopped at traffic lights along Ngong Road. Police described the killing as a targeted and carefully planned attack.
Detectives reconstructing the MP’s final hours say he spent most of the day attending parliamentary business before leaving the city centre later in the evening. CCTV footage reviewed by investigators shows that the suspected attackers had been trailing his movements for several hours before the fatal shooting.
According to the investigation, the suspects coordinated their movements around key locations the MP visited earlier in the day, including areas near Parliament. One of the alleged gunmen was reportedly seen walking along Parliament Road carrying a bag before linking up with other suspects believed to be part of the operation.
Authorities believe the attackers used both a car and a motorcycle to track the MP’s vehicle as it moved through the capital. At several points during the day, the suspects allegedly positioned themselves near the lawmaker’s convoy while monitoring his movements.
Fresh scrutiny has now been directed at the MP’s security detail after investigators arrested his bodyguard and driver as part of the probe. Detectives suspect the bodyguard may have shared information about the MP’s movements or route shortly before the attack took place.
Investigators say CCTV footage captured a moment when the bodyguard briefly stepped away shortly before a motorcycle carrying the suspected assassin began trailing the legislator’s vehicle through the city.
Moments later, the motorcycle followed the MP along Valley Road toward Ngong Road. When the car stopped at a traffic junction near the City Mortuary roundabout, the gunman reportedly approached the vehicle and opened fire before fleeing the scene.
The killing of the Kasipul MP sparked national outrage and raised serious concerns about the security of elected leaders. Investigations into the assassination are still ongoing as authorities work to identify all those involved in the suspected plot.
